Background
The last Saturday of each month is typically reserved for a free Tai Chi practice session, which usually takes place in the Festival Gardens. However, for February, I was away camping in Delamere Forest. This change inspired the idea of inviting students to join me in Delamere for a unique practice amidst the trees.
Gathering at Delamere
With convenient train access from Chester to Delamere, the journey was simple. Neale and I met seven enthusiastic practitioners at the station, and together we headed into the station café for some refreshments. There, we joined another nine individuals, including several students of other Deyin instructors, creating a larger and diverse group.
Coffee, Cake, and Preparation
After enjoying coffee and some light snacks—though the treacle tart was anything but light—we all set off into the forest. The previous evening, we had scouted the area and found a suitable spot among the trees for qigong, as well as a spacious clearing for Tai Chi practice.
Forest Practice
Once settled among the trees, we began with a warm-up followed by the Eight Treasures routine. Next, we practised standing pole qigong, literally hugging a tree in the process. The Qigong section concluded with the Six Healing Sounds, after which we moved to the open clearing to focus on Tai Chi forms. The sun shone brightly, the sky was beautifully blue, and we practised forms 8, 10, 16, and 24.
Lunch and Farewell
After two hours in the forest, we returned to the café for lunch. Thanks to efficient service, everyone was soon enjoying food, drinks, and good company. After saying goodbye to some members in the café, I enjoyed a pleasant walk back to the station with the remaining seven, waved them off, and then Neale and I finished our delightful afternoon with cake and tea at the station café.
